Human Dignity

This year's Week of Prayer took place from the 16-23 May. Although the week has passed, we'd love you to continue praying for all the areas mentioned, using our free prayer resources below.

This year's theme is: Human Dignity. All around us, there are issues that threaten the dignity of those living amid vulnerable circumstances. As Christians, it's our responsibility to honour and uphold the dignity of each and every person - demonstrating God's unwavering love for them.

What do we mean by Human Dignity?
Definition

The concept of human dignity is the belief that all people hold a special intrinsic value. When God created men and women 'in his image and likeness' (Gen. 1:27), He gave them the great responsibility of being his representatives and stewards of his creation, under his merciful and righteous kingly rule. Being 'image bearers' gives us all immense dignity and value, implies a 'sacredness' to our existence, and is the Biblical foundation for a fundamental equality between all people.

The fact that 'God so loved the world that He gave his one and only son' (Jn. 3:16) further affirms the immense dignity of human life: in the incarnation, he embraces becoming fully human, and His Son´s death on the cross is for the sake of every sinful human being. Without a doubt, recognising the dignity of every human life as created 'in the image of God' is key for how we relate to others, for the way we approach our missionary work, and for resisting discrimination.
