Where do teams go?

Our Spring Step 2019 team will be heading to Guatemala! There you'll be involved in 2 different projects, each lasting around 7 weeks, with a week off at the end of each project to discover the country.

What's the plan?

For your first project you will be working with Esperanza de Vida, an educational project based in Alotenango, a small town close to the beautiful tourist town of Antigua, and around 1 hour from Guatemala City. Alotenango is close to the volcano which erupted in June 2018, and has since received many people who lost their homes. Esperanza de Vida are currently supporting local families by running educational programmes and activities for those not in education, and helping to build new homes.

This is where you can help! You don't have to be a professional teacher or builder, you just need to be willing to jump in and get involved! You’ll be supported by The Director of the project, and your team will be involved in the programme, teaching English and bible values, plus any other skills you have- music, sport, crafts…

As well as being involved in the educational project, you'll work alongside families in the construction and painting of their houses, whilst being a part of the local community and church. This will include children's work, youth work, and reaching out in the community. All you need is a desire to serve God and work as part of a team.

For your second project, you’ll be travelling across Guatemala to San Juan La Laguna, on the shores of Lake Atitlan. San Juan is renowned for its colourful natural dyes and weaving.

Here you’ll be working with the Primera Iglesia Bautista, a church planted four years ago. After starting to build their own building with large spaces for meetings and children’s work, a lack of resource has stopped construction.

This is where you come in! Working alongside local church members, you’ll be involved in construction work in the church, as well as children’s work, and evangelistic activities in the town.

You’ll also assist in activities run by AMI San Lucas, a medical and community development project based in San Juan. Supporting the local staff, you could be helping with medical campaigns in villages around the town, giving workshops to young people, or assisting with the installation of water filter systems.

At the end of each project you’ll have a week to take a break as a team and explore beautiful Guatemala – we can give you plenty of ideas for where to go!

Accommodation

Step teams stay right in the heart of the community they are serving, living together as a team either at the project base, in the church building or with members of the church in their houses. Latin Americans are extremely hospitable but as you’re going to areas with greater economic need, you should expect accommodation to be cosy and fairly basic.

How much does Spring Step cost?

Contribution Target: £3,000 plus flights
(£2,600 to cover personal costs + £400 donation to project fund)

We encourage each Step applicant to meet a specific financial target for their time away. This amount is a contribution towards the cost of running the Step programme and your participation in it. We do not want the personal financial contribution to be a stumbling block for anyone keen to serve in Latin America; therefore we look to support those who may find it genuinely difficult to meet this target.

What does your contribution cover?
  • Orientation before departure (residential)*
  • Country specific training and materials
  • Food and accommodation
  • Health clearance and medical advice
  • Project set-up and supervision
  • Residential debrief weekend
  • Comprehensive insurance cover
  • Project material, eg bricks, paint, wood, cement etc.
  • Admin costs – DBS, application process, resources etc.
What's not covered?
  • Return flights
  • Vaccinations – some of them cost money
  • Pre-departure UK travel – we usually book flights from London so you all fly out together as a team
  • Personal spending money

*Orientation for 2019 will be held in North London from Wednesday 20th - Sunday 24th February, and is compulsory.

How much of my contribution will go directly to the projects I am working with?

Latin link commits to giving a minimum of £400, of the total amount raised by each individual, directly to the projects that you will be working with. This money will go towards things such as building materials, paint, crafts, books and teaching equipment, toys, games etc, and is used during the time your team are on the project, so you’ll get to see where it goes.

Extend your adventure!

Latin America is a vast and exciting place! Therefore why not extend your time there by up to four weeks. Don’t miss out on the chance to explore more of this amazing continent while you’re already on the other side of the world. You could complete the five-day trek to Machu Picchu in Peru, visit the salt lakes of Bolivia, relax on the beaches in Cuba, plus do much, much more.

Any additional travel is the responsibility of the applicant: this includes all extra costs that you may incur. Latin Link will arrange your flights to accommodate any additional travel and will extend your insurance at the cost of £10 per extra week.

Still not sure?

Then why not visit the Latin Link Step teams Facebook page and check out loads of past team photos, giving you a more visual flavour of life on a Step team in Latin America.

Alternatively you could take a look at some of the Step Team Reports from past and present Step teams, and hear first-hand what you might experience if you were to sign up!
