Route 2: The Lost City Trek

Colombia's Lost City (Ciudad Perdida) is located in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region. It's thought to date back to around 800 CE, some 650 years before Peru's Machu Picchu. The only way of reaching this settlement is by 4-5 days trekking through thick jungle (or by helicopter, but that's not as adventurous...). The trek involves several river crossings and steep climbs, so a good level of fitness is required! And just when you think you've reached your destination, you'll be faced with the grueling 1200 steps leading up to the entrance of the Lost City site. This is not for the faint of heart!

Expedition details

Distance to travel: 46km

Avg. duration: 3-5 days

Avg. steps (walking): Between 55,000 - 70,000 steps

To work out accurately how many steps you'll need to take, mark out two points 10 metres apart. Count how many steps you take walking from start to finish. Then multiply this amount by 4,600 (you might want a calculator for that one...).

Here's a list of apps to help track distance or steps:

  1. You'll want to plan this route out over a few days, maybe mixing it up with some treks up and down the hallway, as well as using your daily exercise to get through the bulk of it. It's essentially the same length as a marathon, so don't underestimate this trek!
  2. You can use a pedometer to measure your steps, or download a suitable mobile app to measure the distance covered! Don't forget to test it out before you begin, just to make sure it's accurate.
  3. If you're looking to recreate the sights and sounds of the Colombian jungle, we'd recommend the 'Jungle Sounds' playlist on Spotify (other music streaming services are available).
  4. Get your family involved! Who wants to explore an ancient lost city on their own? (We even have expedition certificates that you can download once they've completed the trek)
