Route 3: Machu Picchu

Voted one of the seven wonders of the modern world, Peru's Machu Picchu is a site on every backpacker's bucket list! There are a few route options to get you there, including the classic Inca Trail, but for this expedition you'll follow the Salkantay Trek. The Salkantay Trek is an ancient and remote footpath, located in the same region as the Inca Trail, where snow-capped mountains meet lush tropical rainforests. It usually takes people around a week to complete, and involves camping out at various stages along the way. Don't forget to smile for a selfie with photo-bombing llamas at the top!

Expedition details

Distance to travel: 60km

Suggested duration: 5-8 days

Avg. steps (walking): Between 70,000 - 90,000 steps

To work out accurately how many steps you'll need to take, mark out two points 10 metres apart. Count how many steps you take walking from start to finish. Then multiply this amount by 6000 (you might need a calculator for that!)
