Free this summer? Why not join one of our Summer Step teams?

You can apply to join a team, as an individual, with a friend, or as a married couple. All you need is a willingness to serve, a love for God, and a readiness for adventure!

Summer 2019

Costa Rica: 1 - 23 July 2019

Brazil: 1 - 31 August 2019

Contribution Target:  £950 + flights

Application deadline: 7 May 2019

Interview day in Reading: 17 May 2019

Costa Rica:

You will be supporting a church based in Los Guido, Desamparados near the capital; San José. You will be there to support and encourage the church and, alongside the congregation, you will take down and reconstruct a new, more efficient fence that surrounds the church. This will keep the building secure and protect it from extreme weather.

You will also be involved in church activities such as the Women's and Children's programme, the feeding programme, helping in a local school and other outreach activities.

You’ll fly into Recife and spend a few days in orientation before moving on to Custódia, in rural North Eastern Brazil. Based in a local church you’ll spend your afternoons working with vulnerable children using your skills (whatever they are!) running clubs and activities. You’ll also be involved in the local church activities.

You will also get to know a quilombola community where you will help with the construction of a play area and lead assemblies in a local school. (Quilombola communities are communities of predominantly African descent formed as an act of resistance to slavery and racist oppression.)

Your Step project will end with a few days exploring Recife and the local area.

How much does it cost?

£950 + flights

We encourage each Step applicant to meet a specific financial target for their time away. This amount is a contribution towards the cost of running the Step programme and your participation in it. We do not want the personal financial contribution to be a stumbling block for anyone keen to serve in Latin America; therefore we look to support those who may find it genuinely difficult to meet this target.

What does your contribution cover?

  •  Orientation before departure (residential)*
  •  Country specific training and materials
  •  Food and accommodation
  •  Health clearance and medical advice
  •  Project setup and supervision
  •  Residential debrief weekend
  •  Comprehensive insurance cover
  •  Admin costs - DBS, application process, resources etc.
  •  £50 towards project material e.g. bricks, paint, wood, cement, crafts/ art supplies etc.

What's not covered?

  •  Return flights
  •  Vaccinations - some of them cost money
  •  Pre-departure UK travel - We usually book flights from London so you all fly out together as a team.
  •  Personal spending money

We think it is of utmost importance to prepare our volunteers well and so hold a compulsory Orientation for all those wishing to take part in Step. It is a residential Orientation weekend (Friday-Sunday) so food and accommodation will be provided and the cost covered by your contribution target - all you need to do is get there!

*Orientation for 2019 will be held just outside Reading from 21st - 24th June.

Looking to go for longer?

We also run Spring Step teams from March-July. Teams go for a total of 16 weeks with an option to travel after - perfect for those on a Gap Year!
