Coronavirus COVID-19 update: Summer teams

Due to the current uncertainty around the impact of COVID-19, we are prayerfully considering whether or not the Summer Step teams will go ahead as planned. We are very much hoping they will continue but will do what is best for our members and the communities in which the projects are based. We will be closely following the advice of the UK, Guatemalan, Peruvian, and Argentinian governments and hope to have an update for you soon.

In the meantime, please continue to apply and show interest as normal and we will inform you if anything changes. We will not be taking any payments until we are sure the teams will go ahead.

Argentina | 1st - 29th July 2020*

You will be working with Iglesia Anglicana; a church based in Tartagal, Salta who vision is to "follow the voice of the Good Shepherd".

You will be coming alongside the church by helping them with a range of activities; painting, praying with residents, gardening, DIY, craft, building, sports and drama to name a few! Bring your skills and see what God can do through you. This is your chance to become integrated into a diverse church community.

Guatemala | 28th July - 25th August 2020*

Love sport? Then this is the project for you! You will be supporting the work of Associación Donamor, which is an independent Christian-based organisation working to improve the lives of vulnerable children and adolescents in the capital.

As well as working with children and young people, they run parenting courses and have strong links with many of the local secondary schools. As a team, you will be running sports workshops in these secondary schools, as well as helping the local church with their regular children's work. This is a great way to support a fantastic project and get involved with a Guatemalan community.

How much does it cost?

£950 + flights

We encourage each Step applicant to meet a specific financial target for their time away. This amount is a contribution towards the cost of running the Step programme and your participation in it. We do not want the personal financial contribution to be a stumbling block for anyone keen to serve in Latin America; therefore we look to support those who may find it genuinely difficult to meet this target.

What does your contribution cover?

  •  Orientation before departure (residential)*
  •  Country specific training and materials
  •  Food and accommodation
  •  Health clearance and medical advice
  •  Project setup and supervision
  •  Residential debrief weekend
  •  Comprehensive insurance cover
  •  Admin costs - DBS, application process, resources etc.
  •  £50 towards project material e.g. bricks, paint, wood, cement, crafts/ art supplies etc.

What's not covered?

  •  Return flights
  •  Vaccinations - some of them cost money
  •  Pre-departure UK travel - We usually book flights from London so you all fly out together as a team.
  •  Personal spending money

Orientation

We think it is of utmost importance to prepare our volunteers well and so hold a compulsory Orientation for all those wishing to take part in Step. It is a residential Orientation weekend (Friday-Sunday) so food and accommodation will be provided and the cost covered by your contribution target - all you need to do is get there!

Looking to go for longer?

We also run Spring Step teams from March-July. Teams go for a total of 16 weeks with an option to travel after - perfect for those on a Gap Year!

Information days

After you've sent in your application, you'll be invited to come and meet us at the Latin Link office in Reading. We're hosting a series of Step Information days from February onwards, so you'll have the chance to meet others who are also interested in joining a team and hear more about the projects!

Testimonials | Step 2019

"My experience in Guatemala was so incredible; it was nothing I could’ve been prepared for. God has shown me what it’s to truly rely on his goodness through the amazing people I’ve met, who, through there serving hearts have shown me what it’s like to do everything for God’s glory. Since coming home I have this overwhelming sense of thankfulness in so many areas of my life, something I have learnt from those who have very little, yet are crying out in praise to the Lord for all that they have."

Bethany B, 2019

"My favourite part of Step is how every person you meet impacts you in different ways. You might think the main reason you’re going out there is to help people in need, but most of the time, they are helping you. They demonstrate exactly what it’s like to live an honest and humble life in Christ, whilst being the happiest people you will ever meet. I genuinely am so thankful for seeing this with my own eyes."

Holly Y, 2019
