Summer Step teams

Coronavirus COVID-19 update: Summer teams

We have been continuing to closely follow government advice both here in the UK and in Latin America. With so much ongoing uncertainty we have made the difficult decision not to run our Summer Step teams this year. The safety of our members and the communities in which they are based is a huge priority for us, and alongside the uncertainty around international travel, this feels the right decision for us at this time.

We are so disappointed to have taken this step but trust fully that God is in control and has other plans for us this year. If you have sent in an application, we will be in touch in the coming weeks about how you can stay involved in the work of Latin Link.

We would appreciate your continued prayers, not just for us as a staff team, but also for the communities of the projects in Guatemala and Argentina, as they too navigate this uncertainty and the inevitable changes to their work.

We are continuing to accept enquiries and applications for the 2021 Step programme – please give us a call if you’re interested.

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to get in touch. We very much look forward to sending teams again in the future and would love to hear from you.

Summer Step | The basics

Duration: 3-4 weeks

Cost: £950 + flights

We encourage each Step applicant to meet a specific financial target for their time away. This amount is a contribution towards the cost of running the Step programme and your participation in it. We do not want the personal financial contribution to be a stumbling block for anyone keen to serve in Latin America; therefore we look to support those who may find it genuinely difficult to meet this target.

What does your contribution cover?

  •  Orientation before departure (residential)*
  •  Country specific training and materials
  •  Food and accommodation
  •  Health clearance and medical advice
  •  Project setup and supervision
  •  Residential debrief weekend
  •  Comprehensive insurance cover
  •  Admin costs - DBS, application process, resources etc.
  •  £50 towards project material e.g. bricks, paint, wood, cement, crafts/ art supplies etc.

What's not covered?

  •  Return flights
  •  Vaccinations - some of them cost money
  •  Pre-departure UK travel - We usually book flights from London so you all fly out together as a team.
  •  Personal spending money

Orientation

We think it is of utmost importance to prepare our volunteers well and so hold a compulsory Orientation for all those wishing to take part in Step. It is a residential Orientation weekend (Friday-Sunday) so food and accommodation will be provided and the cost covered by your contribution target - all you need to do is get there!

Looking to go for longer?

We also run Spring Step teams from March-July. Teams go for a total of 16 weeks with an option to travel after - perfect for those on a Gap Year!

Information days

After you've sent in your application, you'll be invited to come and meet us at the Latin Link office in Reading. We're host a series of Step Information days, so you'll have the chance to meet others who are also interested in joining a team and hear more about the projects!

Testimonials | Step 2019

"My experience in Guatemala was so incredible; it was nothing I could’ve been prepared for. God has shown me what it’s to truly rely on his goodness through the amazing people I’ve met, who, through there serving hearts have shown me what it’s like to do everything for God’s glory. Since coming home I have this overwhelming sense of thankfulness in so many areas of my life, something I have learnt from those who have very little, yet are crying out in praise to the Lord for all that they have."

Bethany B, 2019

"My favourite part of Step is how every person you meet impacts you in different ways. You might think the main reason you’re going out there is to help people in need, but most of the time, they are helping you. They demonstrate exactly what it’s like to live an honest and humble life in Christ, whilst being the happiest people you will ever meet. I genuinely am so thankful for seeing this with my own eyes."
