Route 4: Lake Atitlán

This isn't your average lake. Set in the Guatemalan highlands of the Sierra Madre mountain range, this is Central America's deepest lake (a maximum depth of about 340 metres!), and well renowned as one the most beautiful lakes in the world. To take on this Indoor Expedition, you'll be walking the equivalent distance of Lake Atitlán's shoreline - that's a whopping 82km!

Expedition details

Distance to travel: 82km

Avg. duration: 6-10 days

Avg. steps (walking): Between 90,000 - 120,000 steps

To work out accurately how many steps you'll need to take, mark out two points 10 metres apart. Count how many steps you take walking from start to finish. Then multiply this amount by 8,200 (you might want a calculator for that one...).

Here's a list of apps to help track distance or steps:

  2. You can use a pedometer to measure your steps, or download a suitable mobile app to measure the distance covered! Don't forget to test it out before you begin, just to make sure it's accurate.
