Project outline

The team will be serving alongside the local church - Iglesia Misionera Bautista, El Divino Salvador - in a small community called San Benito, in the department of Managua. The church is looking to extend and build two classrooms to be used for children's work and as a base for community outreach. There are NGOs such as Compassion who work in the surrounding areas and the classrooms would provide a much-needed space for community projects such as feeding programmes, working with children living on the streets etc. The classrooms would also be used by the church to run a Bible school and discipleship programme.

They're ready to build and have a skilled builder (maestro) at the ready - all they need now is some willing volunteers to provide some much-needed man power! You don't need to have experience or amazing DIY skills, just a heart to get stuck in and serve.

As well as helping with the building work, your team will be working with the youth and children in the community, doing outreach and evangelism. We're looking for a team who can run sports, games and fun activities to get young people from the area involved, and share the good news of Jesus with them!

You can also expect to be involved in local church life, encouraging the believers there through testimonies and prayer, and joining with them as they witness and reach out to their surrounding community. Share your faith and culture (they always love a song in English!) with our brothers and sisters in Nicaragua this summer!

You’ll get a few rest days, giving you the chance to explore a bit more of this amazing country!

Step teams stay right in the heart of the community they are serving, living together as a team. Your team will be staying in another part of the church building. You'll most likely share a large room (girls and boys will be in separate rooms) with mattresses on the floor. You'll have access to toilets and showers, and a shared kitchen area.

Latin Americans are extremely hospitable but as you're going to areas with greater economic need, you should expect accommodation to be cosy and fairly basic.

We think it is of utmost importance to prepare our volunteers well and so hold a compulsory Orientation for all those wishing to take part in Step. It is a residential Orientation weekend (Friday-Sunday) so food and accommodation will be provided and the cost covered by your contribution target - all you need to do is get there!

Orientation for 2018 will be held just outside Reading from 22nd - 24th June.
