Project outline

You will be working with the foundation Vida en Abundancia in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, in their Habilidades para la vida project for children and young people with learning disabilities. The children are either in ciclo 1 (ages 5 to 13) or ciclo 2 (ages 14 to 19). You will be working alongside and under the guidance of a facilitator, providing general practical support and assistance to the children or young people on a one-to-one basis or in small groups.

As Habilidades para la vida runs in the mornings, there will be opportunities to get involved in other projects. Possibilities include the other project run by Vida en Abundancia, which focuses on women in or at risk of abuse; or a project called Orphaids, which is a home that was originally set up by Latin Link missionaries to provide a home for children whose parents had died from HIV/AIDS related illnesses.

You'll also be part of the local church and have chance to get involved fully there through attending Sunday services and other meetings as appropriate.

Accommodation

You'll be placed with a Latin American host family, which is a great way to immerse yourself in the culture. Latin Americans are very hospitable so you'll most likely become a real part of the family!

You will have everything you need, but expect fairly basic and cosy accommodation as placements are often in areas/communities of need

Orientation

We think it is of utmost importance to prepare our volunteers well and so hold a compulsory Orientation for all those wishing to serve in Latin America.
It is a residential Orientation weekend (Friday-Sunday) so food and accommodation will be provided and the cost covered by your launch costs - all you need to do is get there!

Orientation for 2018 will be held just outside Reading from 22nd - 24th June.

How much does it cost?

All placements are self-funded. The total cost of your placement will depend on a number of factors (where you're going/ how long for) but below is an overview of how costs are calculated:
